Oklahoma football: Dillon Gabriel named Big 12 Offensive Player of Week

Oklahoma football quarterback Dillon Gabriel had a monster day in the Sooners’ 34-30 Red River Rivalry victory over Texas on Saturday and on Monday was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.

Gabriel, in his second season as the OU starting quarterback totaled 398 of Oklahoma’s 486 yards of offense against Texas, including the game-winning touchdown pass with 15 seconds remaining in the game that gave the12th-ranked Sooners a come from behind 34-30 victory over No. 3 Texas.

Gabriel completed 23 of 38 passes for 285 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions and gained a career-high 113 rushing yards along with a rushing touchdown.

The Hawaiian native is the first Oklahoma quarterback to pass for at least 250 yards and run for at least 100 yards in a game against Texas.

For the season, Gabriel has completed 72.3 percent of his passes, is averaging 313 yards per game and has 16 touchdown passes, all Big 12 bests. He also leads the conference in passing efficiency (178.2, 8th nationally), points responsible per game (21.0, 4th nationally) and total offense (347.7 yards per game, 4th nationally).

Gabriel joins Iowa State defensive back Beau Freyler (Defensive Player of the Week), Oklahoma State cornerback Cameron Epps (Newcomer of the Week) and Kansas punt returner Trevor Wilson (Special Teams Player of the Week) as Big 12 honorees this week.

This is the second time this season Gabriel has received a Big 12 weekly honor and the fifth time in his Sooner career. Gabriel was Offensive Player of the Week and freshman wide receiver Nic Anderson was Newcomer of the Week on Sept. 18. Two other Sooners have earned Big 12 weekly awards this season: Gavin Freeman was Co-Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 4, and Danny Stutsman was Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 11.
