How’s it going, Sooner Nation? Is everyone having a good Summer? Well… it’s about to get a lot better. The Oklahoma football program’s 2024 recruiting class just got a new top player in the form of a 5-star tight end.

Davon Mitchell, a 5-star tight end from Los Alamitos, CA, committed today to the Brent Venables-led Oklahoma football program. In perhaps the most significant commitment since Jackson Arnold and easily the biggest grab of the 2023-2024 campaign, Mitchell committed to the Sooners over last-minute charges from the nation’s blue bloods.

Mitchell is a 6-foot, 4-inch, 245-pound tight end who easily ranks as the top tight end in the class of 2024. He’s been a long-time target for the Oklahoma coaching staff, and today, they got him to go all in.

Mitchell is young. He will reclassify to the 2024 class, from the 2025 class, in August and graduate high school in December. This will incur a new ranking to fit with his reclassifying status. However, he will easily still be 5-star ranked.

This kid is the complete package for a tight end. He’s receiver fast, tight end strong, and looks more like a defensive end than an offensive weapon. He has good hands, but his true talent is playing physical with the ball in his hands. He’s an aggressive runner with the ball and hasn’t been shy about seeking contact, not in any of the highlight films I’ve seen. I wouldn’t compare him to Jermaine Gresham because of the size difference and the style of play; however, I think he’s the most significant tight-end commitment in Oklahoma football history outside of Gresham.

Davon Mitchell fits in well with the Sooners’ 24′ class, as he’s reportedly best friends with current Sooners quarterback commit, 4-star (soon to be 5-star) Frisco Emerson gunslinger Michael Hawkins. Mitchell and Hawkins were Allen Eagles last year, and both constantly communicate. In fact, I’m sure Brent Venables is letting Hawkins know he appreciates his services in recruiting Mitchell to Norman.

Mitchell also adds a massive boost to the Sooners 2024 recruiting class rankings. The class sits at 39 in the 247Sports recruiting rankings, and that’s before the Mitchell commitment. His 5-star status, and legitimate playmaking ability, will shoot the class into the top-25. It’s rare to have a team with a five-star commitment outside of the top-15.

Today is an excellent day for Sooner Nation. Landing a talent like Davon Mitchell doesn’t happen to most programs. Keep this kid on your viewing priority list this year; his team will be on ESPN. Don’t worry about the recruiting class either; it looks like it’ll be just fine.

The season is almost upon us, Sooner Nation. Soak up that Summer sun and get your minds right. Saturdays in Norman are right around the corner.

Welcome to Norman Davon. We know you’re bringing a Storm with you.
