Oklahoma baseball dropped an 8-3 decision to Oklahoma State on Friday, eliminating the Sooners from the Big 12 Championship.

The Sooners (31-26), the defending Big 12 Tournament champions, must now wait to find out their postseason fate, which will be determined when the bracket for the 64-team NCAA Baseball Championship is announced on Monday.

In a rematch of the first-round game in the Big 12 Tournament between Bedlam rivals OU and Oklahoma State, which was won by the Sooners 9-5, OSU put up a five-spot in the second inning against Oklahoma starter Will Carsten from which the Sooners were never really able to recover.

The big blow in the decisive second inning for the Cowboys was a three-run, home-run blast by first baseman David Mendham, who had three hits and five RBI in the game.

OU scored two runs in the top of the seventh to narrow the Oklahoma State lead to 6-3. But the Cowboys came right back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to extend the margin to 8-3, and that’s the way things ended.

Oklahoma State moves on to face Texas Tech on Saturday, two of the four teams remaining in the Big 12 Championship. TCU and Kansas State are the other two teams. The Cowboys and K-State both have one loss and must win on Saturday to avoid elimination.

Takeaways from what hopefully is not a season-ending Oklahoma loss

  • Junior Will Carsten was making just his fifth start of the season for Oklahoma. He worked just 1.1 innings and allowed four runs on just two hits a walk and a hit batter. The right-hander faced five batters in the second inning before being relieved by Jett Lodes, one of four OU pitchers who saw action in the game. Carsten (1-3) was charged with the loss.
  • Three Oklahoma hitters had a pair of hits in the game, including John Spikerman, who was 5 for 10 and also walked five times in the Big 12 Championship.
  • Jackson Nicklaus was 1 for 2 on Friday against OSU and went 4 for 7 in the tournament.
  • Both teams left 10 runners on the base paths in Friday’s game.
