You won’t hear any member of the No. 1-ranked Oklahoma softball team talking about it, but the  are within one win of tying the NCAA record for consecutive games won, which currently stands at 47.

That number should be very familiar to passionate fans of Oklahoma athletics because it is the number of consecutive wins posted from 1953 to late in the 1957 season by Bud Wilkinson and the Oklahoma football team, an NCAA record that many believe will never be broken.

Oklahoma will have the opportunity to equal and even pass Arizona at the top of the NCAA record list for consecutive wins when it faces a formidable Clemson team this weekend in the Super Regional round of the 2023 NCAA Softball Championship. If the Sooners can garner two straight wins over Clemson — in what will be the final games played at OU’s Marita Hynes Field, home of Sooner softball since 1998 — OU will not only set a new NCAA record but also punch its ticket to the Women’s College World Series for the 11th time in the last 12 seasons.

At the very least, Oklahoma will have the second longest win streak in college softball history.

The Sooners don’t sit at the top of the list in the college softball record book for consecutive wins — not yet, anyway — but they already own four of the five longest winning streaks in NCAA history. In addition to its current 46-game winning streak, Oklahoma also has posted win streaks of 41 games in 2019, 40 games twice, between 2020-21 and 2021-22.

In the five seasons spanning 2019 to the present, Oklahoma softball teams have won two national championships, finished as national runner-up once, won four straight Big 12 regular-season championships and compiled an overall record of
