If you remember back to your studies of Greek mythology, you’ll remember the tale of the Titans. These mythical beings were said to have been the rulers of the world who preceded the better-known Greek gods. Titans were said to have been enormous rulers of the Earth, standing up to 30 feet tall and ruling with incredible power. There were 12 Titans, all of whom possessed unimaginable power and strength, unmatched by the traditional, better-known Greek gods who followed their reign. Or… maybe their reign isn’t truly over… Maybe one still lives within the walls of the Oklahoma football program.

Tyler Guyton may not be 30 feet tall, but he rules with incredible power and strength. Tyler isn’t a deity either; he’s simply a college kid who’s a dominant football player. But all signs point to a growing legend surrounding Tyler Guyton’s place in the O-line-U legacy and the tales that will be told about this Sooner giant.

Tyler came to Norman before the 2022 season as a transfer from TCU. While in Ft. Worth, Tyler spent two seasons on the roster, appearing in nine games. During his first season in Norman, Tyler saw action in ten games and made five starts at offensive tackle, opposite of 2023 NFL first-round draft pick Anton Harrison.

Tyler’s physical stature is impressive. He stands 6’7” and weighs 320 pounds. He has an athletic build, especially for someone who carries 320 pounds. Tyler is extremely quick and light on his feet, not just for a big man but for an athlete. He also possesses an above-average level of strength. He has the perfect build, quickness, and power to be a first-team All-American offensive tackle.

There are high expectations for Tyler. In an interview with OU Daily, Sooner offensive line coaching legend Bill Bedenbaugh said that Tyler “has all the ability in the world” and that Tyler was “one of the most talented guys I have ever seen. And we’ve had some pretty talented guys come through here.” Bedenbaugh compared Tyler to Sooner offensive line greats like Cody Ford, Creed Humphrey, Orlando Brown, and Anton Harrison. Not to mention other Sooner legends like Lane Johnson. and Trent Williams. Before Tyler Guyton is done being a Sooner, he will be better than them all.

Tyler has an incredible work ethic that he uses to further develop his natural talent. Couple that with his humility and massive physical frame, and the sky is the limit for Tyler. All reports out of Norman this Spring have indicated that Tyler Guyton and guard McKade Mettauer have taken vital leadership roles in the Sooners’ offensive line room. All that’s left for Tyler is game time on the field. This season I look for Tyler to emerge as the clear number one on the Sooners’ offensive line, and I think he’s on the right side of the formation.

The Blindside Tackle

Tradition says that the best offensive lineman on the team is typically the left tackle due to them protecting a quarterback’s ‘blindside.’ Well, Dillon Gabriel is a lefty. So, technically Tyler is the blindside tackle for the Sooners, and it’s not a coincidence. Tyler’s confidence is sky-high right now after Spring too. He had a great collection of Spring practices and looked elite in the Spring game.

In an article I wrote last week, I said that Tyler Guyton is the best football player on the Oklahoma football team, and I stand by it. His size, technique, athleticism, and ferociousness place him not only as the Sooners’ best offensive lineman but one of the potential best offensive tackles in the nation. ***Bold prediction alert*** Tyler Guyton will be an All-Big 12 first-team offensive tackle this season, AND he will be named to an All-American team. I think he’s that good.

I look forward to watching Tyler continue developing and becoming a Sooner leader. He’s already placed himself in a position to be an All-time Sooner Great. Everything is set up for Tyler to have his first All-American season, and if he does, he may go to the NFL. That would be a bummer, right? Yeah, of course, it would. But don’t stress it too much because the guy that backs him up, Cayden Green, will be the next tale to be told in this ethos. Unlike the Titans of the past, O-line-U can’t be conquered and will never be dethroned.
