Former Texas Longhorns wide receiver Brenen Thompson has committed to the Oklahoma Sooners. The composite 4-star receiver announced his intent to transfer at the opening of the spring transfer portal window. This marks the first transfer portal grab for the Oklahoma football program this Spring.
Thompson adds to a deep receiver room for the Sooners, one needing a clear-cut WR1. Following the departure of Marvin Mims to the NFL, the Sooners’ offense has a significant need for one of its receivers to raise their level of play to a dominant level. Current Sooner receivers Jalil Farooq, Drake Stoops, and D.J. Graham are the current front runners for the WR1 spot; however, none of the three made a clear case for the title during the Spring game.
As for Thompson, he brings a lot of speed to Norman. In high school, Thompson put together an elite-level Track reputation. Thompson ran a blazing 10.32 100-meter dash and a 3A state title in the 200 meters (21.27).
He played primarily out of the slot as a high school player and when he was in Texas. He’s also comfortable catching the ball out of the backfield. Seeing him compete for a starting slot position with incoming blazer Jaquaize Pettaway will be interesting.
Thompson’s commitment makes the 3rd commitment for the Spring game weekend, along with the Sooners’ first transfer portal haul. The Sooners also received verbal commitments from OL Isaiah Autry and DB Jaydan Hardy during the Spring game weekend. In total, the Sooners 2024 recruiting class has 5 verbal commitments, with several other high-profile commitments looming in the near future.
The Sooners coaching staff will need to keep their phones charged this week. It is expected the Sooners could receive a commitment from high-profile 4-star players WR Zion Kearney, DT Joseph Jonah-Ajonye, RB Caden Durham, and 5-star phenom WR Bryant Wesco. It should be an exciting start to the Summer for Sooner football fans.
Welcome to Norman, Mr. Thompson. Way better vibes than Austin. We can’t wait to watch you work. We know you’re bringing a storm with you.
