Oklahoma softball: Sooners avenge earlier Baylor loss with series sweep
By Chip Rouse
Nicole May threw a two-hitter and Tiare Jennings and Alyssa Brito hit home runs in a 2-0 Oklahoma win and series sweep over Baylor on Saturday.
The top-ranked Sooners wasted little time getting on the board in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader at Gettterman Stadium in Waco as Jennings homered to left field on the third pitch of the second game, giving OU a quick 1-0 lead. Alyssa Brito led off the second inning with another solo shot to left field, and that proved to be all OU would need as May allowed just two hits in a complete game shutout in earning her 13th win of the season without a loss.
Oklahoma (41-1, 12-0) collected seven hits off of Baylor starter Dariana Orme, who also went the full seven innings but lost for the second time in this series to the Sooners. Orme is the only pitcher to beat the Sooners this season, earning the win in a 4-3 Baylor victory over OU on Feb. 19.
"“The attitude we have is we take pride in never letting anybody beat us twice,” Sooner head coach Patty Gasso said in her postgame comments following OU’s win in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader."
The two teams played a doubleheader on Saturday because of expected inclement weather in the Waco area on Sunday.
Jennings went three-for-four at the plate, collecting three of the Sooners’ seven hits in the second game of Saturday’s twin bill. Her home run was her 11th of the season, tying her for fourth in the Big 12. Brito’s long ball was her 10th of the season, fifth most in the Big 12 this season.
Oklahoma pitching was brilliant in this series as May, Jordy Bahl and Alex Storako held Baylor scoreless in three games and gave up just 10 total hits in the three games. Oklahoma had its issues offensively, as well, scoring a combined 13 runs on 23 hits, far below the Sooners’ nearly nine runs per game average.
The Sooners recorded their 24th, 25th and 26th shutouts of the season, the most in Division I softball, in the three games with No. 19 Baylor.
Oklahoma has now won 52 consecutive Big 12 series, including 43 sweeps, and has won 25 of the last 27 games against Baylor.
The two-time defending national champions have a busy schedule this coming week with midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday at Wichita State and Tulsa before returning home for a three-game weekend series against Kansas.
