Oklahoma golf: Sooner men win team, individual title at The Goodwin
By Chip Rouse
The men’s Oklahoma golf team started the golf tournament strong and finished even stronger to win the 53rd playing of The Goodwin golf tournament at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
The Sooner men came from a stroke down after 36 holes in the 54-hole tournament to win by six shots over the team from Georgia Tech, the nation’s 11th-ranked team. Twenty-eight collegiate teams competed in the annual tournament hosted by Stanford University.
OU made up the one-stroke difference on the very first hole of the final round on a birdie by freshman Jase Summy. That was followed by an eagle on the opening hole by senior Drew Goodman shortly thereafter, and Oklahoma was off and running and posted its second tournament win of the spring season and third in 2022-23.
The No. 13 Sooners led by one stroke after the outward nine, but four consecutive birdies by redshirt-senior Patrick Welch on the back nine widened the OU advantage and enabled the Sooners to close out the win.
In addition to the team championship, Sooner junior Ben Lorenz captured the individual title with a 54-hole score of 9-under-par 201. That was two shots better than Georgia Tech’s Christo Lamprecht.
Welch shot a 5-under 65 in the final round to finish tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard. Redshirt-sophomore Stephen Campbell Jr. tied for 25th at even-par 210 for the 54 holes.
"“It was a great win for us after a bumpy last month of golf,” said head coach Ryan Hybl in a press release posted on the OU athletic website. “It’s always fun to win, but to do it on a championship golf course like Harding Park makes it even more special.”"
Next up for Sooner men’s golf is the Boilermaker Invitational Tournament April 15-16, hosted by Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana. That will be followed by the Big 12 Championship April 23-24 at Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, Kansas, won a year ago by Oklahoma. Four Big 12 teams — No. 2 Texas Tech, No. 9 Texas, No, 13 Oklahoma and No. 24 Kansas State are ranked in the top 25 in the most recent NCAA Division 1 rankings.
