A bronze statue honoring Kyler Murray will find its rightful place in Heisman Park among Oklahoma’s six other winners of college football’s most prestigious award as part of the 2023 Spring Game festivities.

OU athletic director Joe Castiglione announced the unveiling in an interview this week with KREF-AM radio personality Toby Rowland, who doubles as radio voice of Oklahoma sports. The annual Red-White Spring Game will take place on Saturday April 22.

The time of the game and other details associated with the spring game were not disclosed, but Castiglione did say they are hoping for another big turnout. A crowd announced at 75,360 attended the game a year ago. That set a new program record for the annual spring scrimmage that traditionally culminates spring practice every year. The attendance at last year’s game also was the largest nationally last spring.

Baker Mayfield’s Heisman statue was dedicated during last year’s spring game. During the 2022 season a bronze statue of the Selmon brothers was unveiled.

Murray won the Heisman in 2018 beating out Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Murray led Oklahoma to the College Football Playoff that season, where, ironically, the Sooners were paired up against the Crimson Tide. Bama won the game 45-34.

During jus 2018 Heisman season, Murray threw for 4,361 yards and accounted for 54 touchdowns.

Murray’s lifelike bronze statue will be grouped among Okahoma’s other Heisman winners — Billy Vessels, Billy Sims, Steve Owens, Jason White, Sam Bradford and Mayfield — in the area just outside the east side of Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Murray is the fourth Sooner quarterback to win the Heisman, all since the 2003 season.
