Oklahoma football: Sooners back in game in ‘way too early’ 2023 top 25s

The whistle has blown signaling the end of the 2022 college football season, and for Oklahoma football fans, it couldn’t come soon enough.

With almost everyone’s attention now looking ahead to the 2023 season, the media have jumped on the opportunity to feed that appetite with their way-too-early projections of what college football’s top 25 will look like when the calendar flips around to September and the kickoff of the new season.

Now that we have a national champion officially crowned for the 2022 season, the first of the “Way too Early” Top 25 projections for the next college football season have started coming out.

USA Today, ESPN, CBS Sports, 247Sports, Pro Football Focus and Athlon Sports have all issued early top-25 projections for the 2023 season, and there will be others in the coming weeks. Oklahoma makes the cut in several of the early forecasts. We will track these for you as they become available.

Several universal trends have emerged in the top-25 projections that are out so far:

  • Georgia is a unanimous No.1 to begin the 2023 season.
  • A combination of Georgia, Michigan and Ohio State are the top three teams in a majority of the way-too-early top-25s so far.
  • Three Big 12 teams (Texas, TCU and Kansas State) are ranked in every poll, but generally only in the 14-18 range.
  • Oklahoma is ranked in five of the six early projections out so far, but only from 21-25..
