Oklahoma basketball: Grant Sherfield named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

Oklahoma basketball point guard Grant Sherfield had a big week as the Sooners split games last week with the University of Missouri-Kansas City and Arkansas and was rewarded as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
Sherfield, who transferred to Oklahoma this past offseason after two seasons at Nevada and a freshman year at Wichita State, averaged 23.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists as the Sooners defeated UMKC 75-53 and lost to No. 9 Arkansas 78-68. He shot 58 percent from the field (14 of 24) and 67 percent on three-balls (8 of 12) for the week.
In the second annual Crimson and Cardinal Classic against Arkansas, Sherfield scored 23 points along with three steals, two assists and two rebounds.
The Sooner point guard has been on fire offensively, scoring 20-plus points in each of his past three games. He has reached double figures in scoring in all 10 Oklahoma games.
For the season. Sherfield is averaging team highs in points (17.7), assists (4.3), steals (1.0) and minutes (33.9) per game. He leads the Big 12 in three-point field goal percentage (54.9) and is second in made three-pointers per game (2.8) and free-throw percentage (89.2).
Sherfield is joined by West Virginia senior forward Tre Mitchell, named Big 12 Player of the Week. Sherfield is the first Oklahoma player to receive a Big 12 weekly honor this season.
A native of Ft. Worth, Texas, Sherfield was the Mountain West Newcomer of the Year and First-Team All-Mountain West selection in 2020-21.
Oklahoma will host Central Arkansas on Saturday before traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina, to take on Florida next Tuesday in the inaugural Jumpman Invitational. The Sooners will begin Big 12 play hosting Texas on Saturday, Dec. 31
