Oklahoma football: DB C.J. Coldon named Big 12 Newcomer of Week

Oklahoma football defensive back C.J. Coldon had a big game in the Sooners win over Oklahoma State on Saturday, and on Monday he was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.

The redshirt-senior cornerback had an interception, seven tackles and three pass breakups, tying his career high, in the Oklahoma win over its in-state rival. The interception was his third of the 2022 season.

Coldon’s contribution against Oklahoma State was a key part of the Sooners’ defensive success on Saturday. The Cowboys had 18 offensive possessions but scored just one touchdown and two field goals and were held to 4.7 yards per play.

Coldon transferred to OU from Wyoming after last season. He played four seasons at Wyoming before transferring to Oklahoma to finish out his college career. He has played in 10 of the Sooners’ games this season and started in the last two. He has 30 tackles this season, with 10 of those coming in the last two games.

The 5-foot, 11-inch cornerback from Belleville, Illinois, had 13 tackles (4 solo and 9 assisted) at West Virginia, the most recorded by an IU defensive back since Hatari Byrd’s 15 in a game in 2015 against Tulsa.

Coldon is the third Oklahoma player to receive a Big 12 weekly honor this season. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel was Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Sept. 10 and Oct. 17, and punter Michael Turk was named Big 12 Co-Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 31.

Joining Coldon as Big 12 weekly award winners this week are RB Bijan Robinson of Texas, Offensive Player of the Week; DE Brendan Mott of Kansas State, Defensive Player of the Week; PK Griffin Kell of TCU, Special Teams Player of the Week.
