After a 49-14 beatdown of Nebraska in Week 3 of the college football season, things were looking very promising for Oklahoma football, ranked No. 6 in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the Coaches Poll. Two weeks later, the bottom fell out and the Sooners were nowhere to be found in the national rankings and weren’t receiving a single vote.

Losing a couple of games by an average of 40 points will do that to you.

The editors and staff at College Football News have their own weekly ranking of the 131 teams at the Football Bowl Subdivision level. Every week, CFN comes out with a ranking of all 131 FBS teams.

While Oklahoma was occupying the No, 6 spot in the AP and Coaches polls after Week 3, CFN also had the Sooners ranked in the No. 6 position. Since then, Oklahoma has been in a freefall as far national rankings are concerned.

Oklahoma surprised quite a few folks by losing at home to Kansas State in Week 4. Following that loss, OU plummeted to 34th in the College Football News 1-131 rankings. That was bad enough, but things were about to get much worse for Brent Venables’ 2022 edition of Sooner football.

TCU had easy pickings of a dismal Oklahoma defensive performance in a 55-24 blowout in Week 5, dropping OU even further down the CFN rankings, to No. 43.

After Texas completely throttled Oklahoma by an embarrassing count of 49-0, the Sooners worst loss in 118 meetings in the Red River Rivalry series, the Sooners fell to No. 52, a difference of 46 spots from where they were just three weeks earlier.

OU managed to stop the bleeding from a three-game losing streak with a 52-42 win over top 25-ranked Kansas in Week 7. As a result, the Sooners headed back in a northerly direction, jumping up to No. 33. They fell back one spot to No, 34 this week after an open date.

Interestingly, Iowa State, Oklahoma’s opponent this coming weekend is No. 52 this week in the CFN all-inclusive rankings, down from 49 the week earlier.
