It goes without saying that the Oklahoma football faithful could use a big pick-me-up this week after a disappointing first loss of the season over the weekend.

Sooner-killer Kansas State rolled into town this past weekend and did what only the Wildcats seem to be able to do with regularity when they pay a visit to the Palace on the Prairie: Hang a rare home loss on Oklahoma. K-State has beaten the Sooners in Norman in four of its last four visits.

As Brent Venables and the Sooners get back to work this week in preparation for another tough Big 12 challenge at TCU on Saturday, they’re hopeful of getting a motivational boost in the form of a big recruiting announcement around midweek.

Five-star defensive lineman David Hicks Jr., the No. 1-rated D-lineman in the 2023 class and in the state of Texas and No. 12 overall, according to 247Sports, is expected to announce his highly anticipated commitment decision on Wednesday.

Hicks has been on every major program’s target list for quite a while. The top pursuers include Alabama, Texas, Texas A&M, Miami, Oregon, Michigan State and Oklahoma. Several national recruiting services have projected that he will land with the Sooners.

The 6-foot, 4-inch 270-pound Hicks is the type of impact player Venables looked for in building top defensive fronts with NFL-caliber players while at Clemson.

Oklahoma’s 2023 recruiting class has been steadily rising in the class rankings through the summer months. The Sooners are currently No. 6 in both the 247Sports 2023 recruiting rankings and in Rivals‘ team rankings.

The Sooners’ 2023 class has commitments from several elite defensive players as Venables and Co. have made a special focus of improving OU’s defensive presence. Hicks would become a major addition and likely continue OU’s climb in the rankings.
