As expected, following the home Oklahoma football loss to unranked Kansas State on Saturday, the Sooners took a deep plunge in both the Associated Press and Coaches Poll for Week 5.

Oklahoma dropped all the way down from No. 6 to 18th in the AP Top 25. The tumble was a little less severe in the Coaches Poll, where OU is ranked in the No. 16 spot this week.

It is exactly what happened in 2020, the last time head coach Chris Klieman brought a K-State team to Norman. That season, the Wildcats knocked an unbeaten Sooner team out of the top 10, 3rd in the nation at the time, and all the way back to 18th.

The victory over the Sooners on Saturday night actually elevated the Wildcats into the AP Top 25, at No. 25. Oklahoma State and Baylor are also ranked above Oklahoma this week. Oklahoma State is No. 8 in the AP poll and No. 7 in the Coaches Poll. Baylor, despite an identical 3-1 record to OU, moved ahead of the Sooners to No.16 in the AP poll and No. 14 in the Coaches Poll.

Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan and Clemson all remained unchanged in the top five spots this week in both major weekly polls. USC, which scored late to avoid a similar loss of its own on Saturday, moved into the No. 6 spot previously occupied by Oklahoma.

The Sooners hope to avoid what happened to them the last time Kansas State beat them in the 2020 Big 12 opener at OU. That season, Oklahoma let one bad loss turn into two, losing the following week at Iowa State. Next Saturday, the Sooners travel to TCU.
