It’s a different situation for the Oklahoma football opponent this Saturday. After the firing of Scott Frost, Mickey Joseph will step into Nebraska’s interim head coach role.

Joseph played quarterback at Nebraska and got the reigns to the offense in 1991. Joseph led the Cornhuskers to an 8-0 start in the 1991 season but fell to Colorado a week later. The Sooners faced the Cornhuskers in Norman for the season finale, which was a devastating event for Joseph. The signal caller broke his leg early in the first quarter, ending his junior season. He would arrive in Nebraska a year later for his senior season, but it wouldn’t be the same. His most productive performance came in 1991 against Colorado, where he accounted for five touchdowns.

During his coaching career, Joseph has spent time in the state of Oklahoma. After a few stints at the D1 level, he took a gig as the running backs coach for Central Oklahoma (UCO) in 2004-2005. He helped UCO to an 8-4 record in 2004.

After 2005, Joseph took a few years off of college coaching and returned to his hometown in New Orleans. He played a part in the “Florida 4-H Youth Development” and played a father role for students during Hurricane Katrina. It was a special moment for Joseph, as he made connections with young kids and helped them through difficult times.

He would get back into coaching in 2008, and it stayed in Oklahoma. Joseph was the assistant coach for Langston University (Langston, OK) from 2008-2011. After prominent success as an assistant coach, he got offered the head coach at Langston University. He would serve as their head coach from 2011-2013. He led Langston to a 13-7 record in two years. After his time at Langston, Joseph would have short stints at Alcorn State, Grambling State, and Louisiana Tech then found himself at LSU.

Joseph was a big part of the electric LSU offense we witnessed under Joe Burrow. He was named the wide receivers coach for LSU in 2017 and then received the title “assistant head coach” in 2020. He had four receivers selected in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft in 2020 and 2021.

It’s not the ideal situation for Mickey Joseph, his first game being against the No. 6 Sooners. The only head coaching record Joseph has is his 13-7 record at Langston in two years, but he has interesting ties with playing vs. Oklahoma and staying in-state for coaching gigs.
