Quarterback Dillon Gabriel, in his first season of Oklahoma football, has been named the Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week.

Gabriel, who transferred to OU from Central Florida (UCF), shares the Big 12 weekly honor with Colby Reeder, a linebacker for Iowa State.

In Oklahoma’s 33-3 win over Kent State on Saturday, Gabriel completed 75 percent of his pass attempts (21 of 28) for 296 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

His three touchdown passes were for 36, 18 and 58 yards. In two games this season, Gabriel has completed 39 of 51 passes (70.6 percent) for 529 yards and five touchdowns with no turnovers. He ranks No. 8 in the nation in pass efficiency through two games (190.07), ninth in yards per attempt (10.4) and 19th in yards per pass completion (14.7).

Gabriel has thrown at least one touchdown pass in all 28 of his career games (26 at UCF and two at OU) and has thrown at least two scoring passes in 22 games.

Prior to coming to Oklahoma, Gabriel passed for more than 8,000 yards and 70 touchdowns playing three-plus seasons at UCF.

The Oklahoma quarterback joins fellow Big 12 weekly award winners QB Donovan Smith of Texas Tech, named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week; CB Cobee Bryant of Kansas, Defensive Player of the Week; and Phillip Brooks of Kansas State, Special Teams Player of the Week.

This is Gabriel’s first weekly award from the Big 12 and the first for an Oklahoma player this season.

Oklahoma is back in action this weekend in a game against historic rival Nebraska in Lincoln. The game is set for an 11 a.m. CT kickoff and will be televised on FOX.
