The Oklahoma football Sooners continued their rise up the national rankings, moving into the No. 6 spot this week in both major national polls: the Associated Press Top 25 and the AFCA Coaches Poll.

For the second week in a row, the Sooners get the benefit of a team in front of them in the rankings losing. Texas A&M, which previously held down the No. 6 spot, was upset at home by David-and-his-slingshot Appalachian State, the same team that 15 years ago took down Mighty Michigan when the Wolverines were ranked No. 5 in the nation.

Oklahoma has now climbed upward three positions since its preseason No. 9 ranking, the beneficiary of three top-10 teams ranked ahead of OU having lost over the past two weekends.

Looming closely behind the Crimson and Cream, however, are the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Lincoln Riley’s new football family, the USC Trojans. OSU and USC are in reverse positions, depending on which poll you follow. Oklahoma State is No. 7 this week in the Coaches Poll and No. 8 in the AP poll. USC occupies the reverse positions in the AP poll (No. 7) and Coaches Poll (No. 8).

Some would say that Riley continues to haunt the Sooners, with the Trojans advancing upward seven spots from their preseason ranking and now situated within striking distance of OU.

Georgia replaces Alabama at No. 1 in the AP Top 25 this week as a result of the Crimson Tide’s close encounter at Texas, which moved to 21st in the AP poll after being unranked. No. 3 through No. 5 (Ohio State, Michigan and Clemson) remained unchanged in the AP voting. Alabama remains No. 1 in the Coaches Poll with Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and Clemson rounding out the top-five this week in the Coaches Poll.

Baylor dropped eight spots, to No. 17, in the AP poll this week and 11 spots. to No. 19, in the Coaches Poll after suffering a 26-20 loss at No. 21 BYU.

Oklahoma travels to Nebraska next weekend. The Cornhuskers will be operating with a new head coach following the firing of Scott Frost on Sunday.
