Oklahoma soccer: Sooner women earn Big 12 weekly honors
By Chip Rouse
Congratulations to a pair of Oklahoma soccer players who have received Big 12 weekly honors in the opening weeks of the new season.
Sooner senior goalkeeper Makinzie Short was named Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week on Aug. 23 and senior forward Emma Hawkins was honored this week as Offensive Player of the Week in the conference.
Hawkins was stellar this past week for the Lady Sooners. She scored a pair of goals in as many games, including the game-winner in OU’s 3-2 victory over previously unbeaten North Texas. The winning goal against North Texas was executed in spectacular fashion on a bicycle kick.
Hawkins also scored the equalizer in a 1-1 draw with SMU. Her two goals last week on five shots on goal were also the first two of her Oklahoma career.
Short recorded 12 saves in goal for the Sooners during the opening week of the season two weeks ago. Ten of those saves came in a single game, a 2-1 loss to her former school, Nebraska. Her 12 saves on the season lead all Big 12 goalkeepers.
The Sooners are 1-2-2 so far this season but find themselves in 10th place in the Big 12 standings but just a half-game out of 8th place. Oklahoma finished seventh in the Big 12 a year ago with an overall record of 8-11-1. The Sooners highest Big 12 finish was tied for third two different times, in 2010 and 2016.
OU has two matches this week, against Tulsa on Thursday and Oral Roberts on Sunday. Both matches are in Tulsa. The Sooners have four more nonconference matches scheduled before beginning Big 12 play on Sept. 23 at Baylor.
