Week 1 of the 2022 college football season is officially in the books, and the Oklahoma football Sooners, under new leadership this season, are already on their way upward in the national rankings.

The Week 2 Coaches Poll came out slightly after the noon hour on Tuesday with Oklahoma in the No. 7 spot, and advancement of two positions from its No. 9 ranking to start the season.

The Sooners are also ranked No. 7 this week in the Associated Press Top 25.

It gets even better for Sooner fans if you follow the ESPN weekly college football power rankings. Oklahoma is No. 4 in that ranking index behind new No. 1 Georgia, Alabama, and Ohio State.

The Sooners had a relatively easy time with UTEP, defeating the Miners 45-13 in the season opener on Saturday. That was a strong start to the season and the beginning of the Brent Venables head-coaching era at Oklahoma. But the Sooners’ advancement in the rankings is really the result of two top-10 teams that were ranked ahead of them losing their season openers.

Previous No. 5 Notre Dame lost at No. 2 Ohio State, even though the game was much closer than the experts had predicted, and No. 7 Utah was upset at then-unranked Florida.

Reigning Big 12 champion Baylor rode the same wave as Oklahoma, moving up two spots to No. 8, right behind the Sooners, and Oklahoma State is up one position in the Coaches Poll to No. 10 this week.

Texas, however, despite a 52-10 win over Louisiana Monroe, fell four spots to No. 22 this week.

As expected, Alabama, a big winner over Utah State, remained No. 1. Georgia moved into the No. 2 spot in the Coaches Poll, jumping Ohio State, which is No. 3 this week. Clemson remained at No. 4, followed by Michigan and Texas A&M. Notre Dame dropped down to No. 9 after a hard-fought 21-10 loss to Ohio State.

Oklahoma hosts Kent State on Saturday.
