Oklahoma assistant head coach/WR coach Cale Gundry has resigned his post effective immediately.

Coach Gundy has been with the Oklahoma program since Bob Stoops was hired in 1999. Gundy served as RB coach for the Sooners from 1999-2014 and was one of the best recruiters in the business. Bringing in talented guys like Adrian Peterson, Joe Mixon, and DeMarco Murray. When Lincoln Riley came over from ECU to be the offensive coordinator Gundy moved to inside WRs, and had that post until this offseason, when he took the entire position group.

Gundy was known as a jack-of-all-trades type of coach with an intimate knowledge of all sorts of offensive systems. Cale served as the team’s play caller in the Alamo Bowl against Oregon, where he showed his chops calling one of the best offensive games of the year for the Sooners. Gundy leaves the school as the all-time winningest person(s) between his time as the team’s starting QB and assistant coach. His brother, Mike Gundy is the winningest person in the history of Oklahoma State football. The Gundy name is royalty in the great state of Oklahoma and will be for an eternity.

Coach Cale Gundy leaves a strong legacy at the University of Oklahoma, and if he so chooses will not be without a job for long. Gundy has always had a strong relationship with his players and will be sorely missed.

The reason for his resignation is he allegedly used a certain word, that he mistakingly read off of the iPad of one of the players in his room. What the word implied, is clearly unacceptable. Coach Gundy in his words chose to resign rather than be a distraction for the team. Whether a resignation seems necessary or not is difficult to judge without being in the room when the incident took place. Either way, Coach Gundy walks away the winningest Sooner to ever live. Good luck in your future endeavors coach.

Coach L’Damian Washington will be the interim WR coach, as the Sooners search for their new guy. Perhaps former Sooner standout and current TCU WR coach Malcolm Kelly? Headin’ back to Norman Kelly poppin’ trunk?
