Oklahoma baseball: Sooners No. 2 in final USA Today Coaches Poll
By Chip Rouse
At the end of May, five SEC schools and three Big 12 teams were ranked in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Neither the Ole Miss nor Oklahoma baseball programs was among them.
As they say, it’s not where you start or how you got there but where you finish that matters most, and the Sooners ended the 2022 season No. 2 in the land after falling to the Ole Miss Rebels in the championship series of the Men’s College World Series in Omaha.
The Sooners ended the 2022 season with a 45-24 overall record and their most wins since the 2010 season, when they finished with a record of 50-18. In 2010, however, OU made it into the College World Series, the Sooners’ most recent CWS appearance before this season, but were eliminated in the quarterfinals by South Carolina.
Oklahoma was unranked to begin the season and was projected by the Big 12 coaches in the conference’s annual preseason poll to finish sixth in the league standings.
National champion Ole Miss, of course, finished the season at No. 1. Rounding out the top five in the Coaches Poll were No. 3 Arkansas, No. 4 Texas A&M and No, 5 Notre Dame.
The No. 2 ranking is the highest for an Oklahoma baseball team to end the season since that 2010 Sooner squad that finished at No. 5. OU finished the 2012 season ranked 14th and ended the following season at No. 17, but those are the only years the Sooners have finished in the nation’s top 25 over the past 12 seasons.
Three other teams from the Big 12 ended the 2022 college baseball season ranked in top 25 of the Coaches Poll. Texas ended the season at No. 8, Oklahoma State was 17th and Texas Tech 25th.
