Oklahoma baseball: Sooners to add Baylor transfer for 2023
By Chip Rouse
Oklahoma baseball is still playing in the 2022 season, one of 16 teams remaining in the postseason NCAA Baseball Championship, but while doing so the Sooners also have an eye on building the roster for next season.
The Sooners have added former Baylor player Kyle Nevin, who announced this week that he is transferring to Oklahoma for the 2023 season.
Nevin played three seasons at Baylor and was a prime contributor in the Bears’ lineup this season.
The West Coast native from Poway, California, led Baylor this season with a batting average of .304 along with eight home runs and 21 RBIs. Nevin started all 54 games for Baylor.
Listed as an infielder/outfielder on the Baylor roster sheet, Nevin appeared to spend most of his time at first base late in the season. In 2021, he was used mainly in left field. His versatility in the field could be a big asset for Sooner head coach Skip Johnson as he builds the lineup for next season.
Nevin is the son of former MLB player Phil Nevin, who played 12 seasons for seven different major league teams. Like his son, the elder Nevin played both infield and outfield positions. Phil is now the interim manager of the Los Angeles Angels, after the dismissal this week of manager Joe Madden.
Phil Nevin and OU assistant Reggie Willits were together on the staff of the New York Yankees last season.
The Sooners, who won the Gainesville Regional over Florida last weekend begin a best-of-three Super Regional series with the Virginia Hokies in Blacksburg, Virginia, on Friday.
