No. 1-ranked men’s Oklahoma golf dropped back to second place after shooting a second-round score of three-under-par 285 in the 54-hole NCAA Norman Regional.

The Sooners relinquished the top spot to the Auburn Tigers, who were ranked 18th in the country coming into the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. Auburn posted a second-round score of 12-under 276, giving the Tigers a 36-hole team score of 556, six better than Oklahoma.

Auburn was tied for third place after the opening 18 holes on Monday at the Jimmie Austin Golf Club in Norman, OU’s home course.

Oklahoma senior Logan McAlister had the best scoring round on Day 2 for the Sooners. McAlister followed up his opening-round 71 with a two-under 70 on Tuesday. He is one of three OU golfers (Chris Gotterup and Patrick Welch are the others) tied for eighth on the individual leaderboard with a 36-hole score of three-under 141.

True freshman Drew Goodman leads the Sooners after 36 holes with a score of four-under 140, which is tied for sixth individually. Goodman shot 67 (-5) in Monday’s opening round.

Four Sooners currently rank among the top 15 player on the individual leaderboard. That is the most of any of the 13 schools competing in the Norman Regional.

Texas is in third place after Day 2 with a score of eight-under 568, tied with Ole Miss. Utah holds down fifth place at 572 (-4).

The top five teams after 54 holes in the Norman Regional and the top individual not on one of those teams qualify to move on to the NCAA Championship May 27-June 1 at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The Sooners are the No. 1 overall seed in this year’s NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. A year ago, OU was the runner-up to NCAA national champion Pepperdine.
