Oklahoma baseball: Sooner Brett Squires earns Big 12 Player of the Week

He had a terrific weekend at the plate in Oklahoma baseball’s weekend series with West Virginia, and on Monday OU’s Brett Squires was awarded for that performance with the designation as Big 12 Player of the Week.

The Oklahoma position player shares the Player of the Week award this week with Luke
Boyers of TCU. Jake Jackson of Baylor is Pitcher of the Week and Texas Tech outfielder Owen Washburn is Newcomer of the Week.

Squires, a redshirt junior who plays infield and outfield positions for the Sooners, was the designated hitter in Oklahoma’s 17-7 rout of the Mountaineers on Sunday. He also was the designated hitter in the series opener on Friday and was a pinch hitter on Saturday.

On Sunday, Squires went 4 for 4 at the plate with a home run and three runs batted in. In Friday’s 15-1 Oklahoma win, Squires collected two hits in three official plate appearances, including a double, and three RBI. He added another RBI with a ground out as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning on Saturday.

For the full weekend series, Squires’ stat line read: Six hits in eight at bats, 7 RBI and five runs scored.

For the season, the Grapevine, Texas, native is batting a healthy .380 in 31 games, with 26 RBI and 5 home runs.

He began his collegiate career at McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas This is Squires’ second season with the Sooners. He appeared in 42 games last season for OU, hitting .275 with six home runs and 28 RBI.

Squires is the fifth Oklahoma player to receive a Big 12 weekly honor this season. It is the second time Squires has been so honored. He was also Player of the Week for the week of May 3.
