An historic season for women’s Oklahoma tennis continues this weekend with the Sooners hosting one of the regional sites in the 2022 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championship.

The Sooners are a No. 2 national seed and will serve as a host site for the first two rounds of the championship this Friday and Saturday at the Headington Family Tennis Center, where Oklahoma is a perfect 14-0 this season.

Oklahoma will begin regional play with a match against Bryant at 3 p.m. on Friday. That match on Friday in the opening round of the Norman Regional will be preceded by a matchup between Arizona and San Diego State. The winners of the two opening-round matches will compete in a Saturday match for the regional championship.

The winner of the regional championship on Saturday will advance to the NCAA Super Regionals on May 13-14. The eight teams that advance out of the super regionals will move on to the NCAA Women’s Championship, set for May 19-22 in Champaign, Illinois, hosted by the University of Illinois.

This will be the Sooners 12th NCAA Tournament appearance. Their No, 2 national seed is the highest in program history.

Oklahoma finished the 2022 regular season with a 27-2 overall record and a perfect 9-0 record in Big 12 play, earning the Sooners their first outright Big 12 regular-season title. OU finished as runner-up to Texas in the Big 12 Championship, although the Sooners defeated the Longhorns twice during the regular season.

The Sooners defeated then-No. 1 and reigning national champion Texas 4-1 on March 12, their first victory over the Longhorns in women’s tennis since 2003. OU’s other 2022 regular-season loss was to North Carolina on Feb. 14. The Tar Heels were ranked No. 2 at the time and are a No. 1 seed in this year’s NCAA Women’s Championship.
