Oklahoma baseball: OU’s Blake Robertson named Big 12 Newcomer of Week
By Chip Rouse
Oklahoma baseball first baseman Blake Robertson has been on a hitting terror and this week he was recognized by the Big 12 as Newcomer of the Week.
In OU’s series last weekend at Kansas, Robertson exploded for 11 hits and scored 11 runs. The first-year Sooner from nearby Edmond, Oklahoma, was 11 of 17 at the plate in the Kansas series for a .647 batting average, a .700 on-base percentage and 1.118 slugging percentage. Six of his 11 hits went for extra bases, including five doubles and a home run.
Robertson also had a hit and an RBI in Oklahoma’s 9-5 win over Wichita State earlier in the week.
The Sooner first baseman drove in six runs on two hits on Sunday with a three-run home run as OU routed the Jayhawks 24-4 to sweep the series.
Robertson began his college career at Oklahoma State in 2020 but did not appear in a game. He played last season at Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kansas.
The Oklahoma newcomer joined three other Big 12 players who received conference accolades for their performance last week. Ivan Melendez of Texas was Player of the Week, and Justin Campbell of Oklahoma State and Brandon Birdsell of Texas Tech shared Pitcher of the Week honors.
Robertson leads Oklahoma with a .386 batting average, fourth best in the Big 12. His .519 on-base percentage also leads the Sooners.
This is the first Big 12 weekly honor for Robertson and the third this season for Oklahoma. Chazz Martinez was Pitcher of the Week Feb. 28 and David Sandlin was Newcomer of the Week on March 14.
