No. 6 Baker Mayfield’s 6 greatest games as a Sooner
No. 1 — 2015, at Ohio State, Oklahoma 31, Ohio State 16
Baker Mayfield led Oklahoma to an incredible win for the ages in a road trip to Columbus, Ohio, in 2017.
Oklahoma was virtually counted out in this game before it kicked. After all, OU did host the Buckeyes in 2016 and things did not go well. The Sooners were defeated 45-21 in embarrassing fashion. Mayfield looked on after that loss, as the Ohio State team sang their alma mater on the Sooners home field. I think the hurt of that loss was so great it led to the 2017 performance in many ways.
Mayfield was sensational throughout, but despite making it into Buckeye territory on every first-half drive, OU only came away with three points in the opening half despite dominating the stat line nearly four-to-one in yards.
In the second half, Ohio State opened up with the ball and scored to go up 10-3. OU quickly answered with a Mayfield touchdown pass to Dimitri Flowers, which tied it up at 10. After an Ohio State field goal, Mayfield threw a touchdown pass to walk-on WR/TE Lee Morris giving the Sooners a 17-13 advantage.
After a Buckeye turnover on downs, Mayfield found Trey Sermon in a very tight window for a 10-yard score. With the lead now at 24-13, pressure mounted for Ohio State, as quarterback J.T Barrett threw an interception. After a long completion by Mayfield to WR Jeff Badet, Jordan Smallwood scored on a one-yard TD to ice the game once and for all for Oklahoma. Mayfield finished with 386 passing yards and three touchdowns in a legendary performance.
Mayfield capped off the huge Oklahoma win with perhaps the most brash move in the history of an away college football game:
Baker Mayfield will always be revered for his triumphs in college, and for helping the Cleveland Browns end their cursed playoff and victory drought. This regardless of how his still promising young NFL career turns out.
