Oklahoma softball: Sooners sweep Big 12 weekly awards for third time
By Chip Rouse
For the third time this season, a pair of Oklahoma softball players have swept Big 12 weekly honors.
Senior Grace Lyons and sophomore Nicole May have been named Big 12 Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
Lyons earned player of the week honors for a week that consisted of a .600 batting average (6 of 10), four home runs, five RBI and nine runs scored. She also recorded a pair of walks.
The senior shortstop homered in each of OU’s three wins at Texas Tech and left the yard twice in the Sooners opening-game 11-0 win over the Red Raiders. Her four home runs over the weekend gives her 17 for the season, surpassing her previous season high of 14 set last year.
May picked up a pair of wins in the circle for the Sooners, her 10th and 11th of the season, and was part of an 11-0 no-hitter on Sunday along with teammate Jordy Bahl. May’s line for the weekend included no runs on just three hits in 7 1/3 innings pitched. She struck out eight of the 27 Texas Tech batters she faced and allowed an opponent’s batting average of just .130.
Oklahoma shutout the Red Raiders in three straight games over the weekend, outscoring them 43-0. All three wins were decided by run rule. The Sooners have posted 30 run-rule victories in 36 games this season.
This was the second career weekly conference award for May and the first for Lyons.
Eight different OU players have earned Big 12 weekly honors this season, and of the nine weeks thus far in which a weekly Big 12 award has been conferred, at least one Sooner has been so honored in six of them
