Oklahoma softball: Jocelyn Alo’s big weekend earns Big 12, national honors

In case you missed it, super senior Jocelyn Alo had a record-tying weekend in Oklahoma softball over the weekend, clubbing five fence-clearing blasts and tying the NCAA record for career home runs.

Also, who led the nation with 34 home runs a year ago, leaving her just eight shy of breaking the NCAA record of 95, set by former Sooner softball player Lauren Chamberlain in 2015.

In recognition of her record-tying performance in five Oklahoma wins last weekend, Alo has been named Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I Player of the Week as well as Big 12 Player of the Week.

The No. 1-ranked Sooners improved to 10-0 over the weekend in part due to Alo’s stellar performance. The Hawaiian-native batted .600 in five games with five home runs, 11 runs batted in and seven extra-base hits. For the weekend, Alo’s slugging percentage was 1.733 fueled by 26 total bases.

Alo hit a pair of home runs each on Friday and Saturday and hit her fifth of the weekend, the one that tied the NCAA record, in the opening inning of the Sooners’ 8-0 win over Texas State on Sunday.

Through 10 games, Also is hitting .500 with seven home runs and 18 RBI.

This is the second time in her OU career Alo has been recognized as the NFCA National Player of the Week. She received the honor in March last season.

Alo will likely break the NCAA career home run record sometime this weekend while Oklahoma is in Palm Springs, California, as one of five teams participating in the annual Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
