Oklahoma basketball freshman Kelbie Washington has been named Big 12 Freshman of the Week for her performance in the Sooners’ rivalry wins last week over Oklahoma State and Texas.
Washington averaged 8.0 points, 4.5 assists ,3.5 steals and 2,5 rebounds in 18th-ranked Oklahoma’s 84-58 win over Oklahoma State and the 65-63 come-from-behind win over No. 9 Texas on Saturday.
The talented freshman is well on her way to having one of the best freshman seasons in the history of Oklahoma women’s basketball. In the two Sooner wins last week, Washington logged 23 minutes in each game and handed out seven assists against the Cowgirls of Oklahoma State while contributing 10 to the scoring column in the upset of the Lady Longhorns.
Washington is on a pace to finish with 119 assists for the season, which would place her third all-time for an OU freshman. She is presently averaging 4.4 assists per game. That would rank only behind former Sooner two-time All-American Stacey Dales, who averaged 5.4 assists her freshman season in 1998-99.
The Norman native is averaging 7.5 points per game this season.
This is Washington’s second Big 12 honor this month. She was Big 12 Freshman of the Week on Jan. 4 and also USBWA National Freshman of the Week.
She shares Big 12 weekly recognition this week along with Jordan Lewis of Baylor, who was named Big 12 Player of the Week.
The Sooners are back in action on Wednesday night, when they will meet Lewis and her 11th-ranked Baylor teammates in Waco. Oklahoma won the earlier meeting between those two teams, defeated the Bears 83-77 in Norman on Jan. 12.
