An 11-win season and a postseason bowl victory over 14th-ranked Oregon and a 10th-place finish in the final Associated Press Top 25 put the finishing touches on a difficult 2021 Oklahoma football season.

The Sooners moved up four spots from their previous AP ranking of 14th at the end of the regular season. OU is one of three Big 12 teams that finished in the top 10. Big 12 champion Baylor is No. 5 and Oklahoma State. The Big Ten (No. 3 Michigan, No. 6 Ohio State and No. 9 Michigan State) also placed three teams in the top 10.

Oklahoma also finished 10th in the final Coaches Poll for the 2022 college football season.

Former OU head coach Bob Stoops came out of retirement to lead the Sooners to a 47-32 win over Oregon in the Alamo Bowl. Both teams were without their head coaches from the 2021 regular season. Lincoln Riley and Mario Cristobal both left after the final regular-season game to take head-coaching jobs at other schools (Riley at USC and Cristobal at Miami).

Oklahoma has finished out of the top 10 in the Associated Press final poll just twice in the past 10 season. In 2014, the Sooners were unranked at the end of the season, and in 2012 OU placed 15th in the final poll.

The Sooners’ highest ranking in the final AP poll in the last decade was a third-place finish in the 2017 season. Oklahoma lost to Georgia in double overtime that season in one of the national semifinal games as part of the College Football Playoff.

Only Alabama has been ranked more weeks in the AP Top 5 than Oklahoma since the AP poll was introduced in 1936.
