The name Ted Roof is going to appear on the Oklahoma football roster in a couple of places when next season rolls around.

Ted Roof is the new defensive coordinator on Brent Venables’ staff, and on Friday the Sooners picked up T.D. Roof, his sone, from the transfer portal.

T.D. Roof is coming to Oklahoma from Appalachian State as a graduate transfer. He played linebacker the past two seasons at Appalachian State, collecting 41 solo tackles and 67 total, three sacks and three interceptions in 2021 as a senior.

The younger Roof was recruited as a three-star prospect in the 2017 class out of Buford, Georgia, where his dad was working at the time as defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech. T.D. signed with Georgia Tech but was there just one season before transferring to Indiania. His father became the new defensive coordinator at Appalachian State in 2019, so T.D. was on the move again, rejoining his father at the North Carolina school. He had to sit out the 2019 season, however, because of the NCAA transfer rules.

Given this pattern, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the younger Roof would choose to finish out his college eligibility at Oklahoma.

“Depth, production and a veteran presence are never a bad thing to have in a locker room,” writes Bryant Crews of Sooners Wire, a sports blog affiliated with USA Today Sports, ” and T.D. Roof brings all three for the Sooners.”

Roof will join DaShaun White, Danny Stutsman, David Ogwoegbu and Shane Wittier among returning Sooners in the linebacker room. OU also has elite LB recruits Kip Lewis, Jaren Kanak and Kobie McKenzie coming in as newcomers in 2022.
