Oklahoma basketball: Sooners make it eight-straight wins over UT Arlington

Three Sooner starters scored in double figures as Oklahoma basketball rolled to a 70-50 win over the University of Texas at Arlington on Sunday at Lloyd Noble Center.

Senior shooting guard Umoja Gibson led the Sooners with 14 points, including four of eight from long range, as Oklahoma improved to 9-2 for the season.

Oklahoma came into the game ranked second in the nation in field-goal percentage on two-point shots taken inside the three-point line. On Sunday, the Sooners made 20 of 30 field goal shots taken inside the arc, seven points higher than their 60.3 percent season average. UT Arlington entered the contest holding its opponents to 42.4 percent on two-point field-goal attempts. That ranked 14th best in the country.

Overall, the Sooners shot 55 percent for the game, five points better than their season average, which ranks 10th among Division I schools. At the same time, the OU defense held the Mavericks to just 34 percent shooting for the game (17 of 50).

OU opened up the game on an 11-0 run and widened the advantage to 19 points, 28-9, with just under five minutes to go in the first half. The Sooners never trailed in the game. Their largest lead was 28 points, at 63-35, with 6:28 remaining in the game.

UT Arlington was led in the scoring column by David Azore, who had 15 points

Jalen Hill, who leads Oklahoma with a 69 percent field-goal percentage was a perfect five for five from the field for 12 points, and Tanner Groves contributed 13 points. True freshman C.J. Noland led the OU reserves with nine points off the bench.

On a down note, the Sooners created 17 turnovers in the game, 11 of which came off of steals by UT Arlington.

Oklahoma is now 8-0 all-time against UT Arlington. Seven of those wins have been in Norman.

The Sooners will play next on Wednesday at home against Alcorn State. That will be the last game of the 2021 portion of the schedule. OU will begin Big 12 play on Jan. 1 at home, hosting Kansas State.
