Oklahoma football: Sooners awarded 3 of 5 Big 12 weekly honors
By Chip Rouse
The Big 12 Conference honored five players for their performances in last Saturday’s games and three of the five went to Oklahoma football players.
OU defensive lineman Jalen Redmond was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, defensive back Key Lawrence is Newcomer of the Week and punter Michael Turk is Co-Special Teams Player of the Week.
Redmond broke a 7-7 tie with Iowa State with a 42-yard fumble return for a touchdown with nine seconds to go in the first half. The redshirt sophomore from nearby Midwest City, Oklahoma, also contributed two tackles for loss, a sack and four quarterback hurries in the Sooners’ 28-21 win over the Cyclones. It was Oklahoma’s first defensive touchdown of the season and the first by defensive lineman in a home game since 1978.
Lawrence, a transfer from Tennessee, recorded seven tackles, a sack and created two forced fumbles, including the one recovered by Redmond for a touchdown. His two forced fumbles were the most by an Oklahoma Sooners in two seasons.
Turk, a fifth-year senior transfer from Arizona State, averaged 55 yards on six punts in the Iowa State game. Three of his punts were 60 yards or longer. His shortest punt, which traveled 40 yards, was downed on the 10-yard line.
This is the first Big 12 weekly honor for all three Sooners and the sixth time an Oklahoma player has been so recognized by the conference this season.
Two other Big 12 players were honored this week: Jarret Doege, West Virginia quarterback, is the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, and Texas Tech punter Austin McNamara shared Co-Special Teams Player with Turk.
