Oklahoma freshman quarterback Caleb Williams record-breaking performance against Texas Tech earned him national honors as the Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week.

Williams, who replaced Spencer Rattler, a preseason All-American and preseason favorite to win the 2021 Heisman Trophy, in the first half of the Texas game, was also named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.

Both honors came as a result of an outstanding performance by Williams in Oklahoma’s 52-21 blowout over Texas Tech this past weekend,

Making his third career start for the Sooners on Saturday, Williams set a school record for a true freshman quarterback at Oklahoma, throwing for 402 yards, including six touchdown passes, which tied an OU freshman record. He completed 22 of 30 pass attempts, a 76.7-percent completion percentage, and ended the day with a 255.2 passing efficiency rating, the best recorded by a college quarterback this past week and the best by a quarterback this season with at least 30 passes in a game.

His six touchdown passes against Texas Tech were thrown to five different receivers. Nine different receivers caught passes in the game.

For the season, Williams has passed for 1,189 yards and 14 touchdowns with one interception. His 203.7 passing efficiency rating ranks second in the nation at the FBS level.

Williams was a five-star recruit out of the Washington, D.C., area and the No. 1 quarterback in the 2021 class.

Williams is the third Oklahoma quarterback to throw at least six touchdown passes in a single game. The others are Baker Mayfield (2016 vs. Texas Tech) and Kyler Murray (2018 vs. Baylor).
