The new-look Oklahoma men’s basketball team is picked to finish seventh in the 2021-22 Preseason Big 12 Men’s Basketball Poll.

With only three returning scholarship players and one starter from last season’s Oklahoma team that finished 16-11 overall and 9-8 and tied for sixth place in the Big 12 standings, new head coach Porter Moser has filled out the 2021-22 Sooners’ roster with six transfers and three true freshmen.

Sixth place was where the Sooners were picked to finish in the preseason men’s basketball poll a year ago, and that is exactly how they ended up.

Over the last 10 years, Oklahoma has averaged a sixth-place preseason projection in the annual poll of the league coaches.

Kansas was the heavy choice to win the Big 12 this season, followed by Texas, Baylor and Texas Tech. Oklahoma State and West Virginia tied for 5th place rounding out the top five. The only teams picked to finish below the Sooners are TCU in seventh, Kansas State and Iowa State.

Kansas received eight of the 10 first-place votes by the league coaches. In the 25-year history of the Big 12, the Jayhawks have been picked outright or tied for first in 19 Big 12 preseason basketball polls.

This is the first season at OU for Moser, who replaces Lon Kruger, who retired after last season after 10 seasons coaching the Sooners. For the past 10 seasons, Moser was the head coach at Loyola-Chicago.

Oklahoma tips off the 2021-22 season on Nov. 1 with a home exhibition game against Rogers State. The regular season officially opens on Nov. 9 with the Sooners hosting Northwestern State at Lloyd Noble Center.
