Most of the Oklahoma football recruiting news in recent weeks has been about the 2023 class, but there is a lot of optimism brewing there could be some big news coming for the Sooners regarding their top-15 rated 2022 class.

Gentry Williams, a four-star, in-state cornerback recruit has narrowed his list of finalists to four schools, including the Sooners, and said he will announce his decision on Oct. 18.

Williams is the No. 3 cornerback in the 2022 class and the No. 1 player in the state of Oklahoma, according to 247Sports.

In a Twitter post, Williams announced earlier this week that he will choose between two SEC schools, Missouri and Florida (and a future SEC school in OU), and Pac-12 giant USC. The 6-foot, 170-pound defensive back did not tip his hand as to how he might be leaning, but according to 247Sports crystal ball projections, the standout recruit from Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa is a better bet to land at OU or USC.

The Sooners have been recruiting Williams since he was a freshman in high school. He was originally being looked at as an athlete, but over time it became clear that he had a greater interest and was a better fit as a defensive back.

If Williams were to commit to Oklahoma, he would become the fifth defensive player and third defensive back in the Sooners’ 2022 class, which is ranked 12th in the country by 247Sports.

The two other defensive backs who have committed to OU for 2022 — safety Robert Spears-Jennings and cornerback Jayden Rowe — are also in-state recruits. Spears-Jennings is from Broken Arrow and Rowe is from Tulsa.
