There are plenty of bronze statues situated around OU Memorial Stadium — five Heisman winners (with two more to come) and four legendary head coaches — and in the near future there will be one honoring OU’s most famous brother trio.
The names Lucious, Dewey and Lee Roy Selmon will forever be etched in Oklahoma football history. The Selmon brothers are three of the greatest defensive players to ever put on a Sooner uniform. And by sometime next year, their images will become a permanent part of the grounds just outside Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
Plans for a bronze statue of the Selmon brothers were revealed during the Oklahoma-Nebraska reunion activities last Friday night. The statue honoring the Selmons will be located at the corner of Jenkins Avenue and Brooks Street.
The Selmons played at OU for Chuck Fairbanks and Barry Switzer from 1970 through 1975. Lucious was the first Selmon brother to arrive in Norman. His first year was 1970, and in 1973 he was named an All-American. Dewey and Lee Roy arrived in 1972, and both were named All-Americans in back-to-back seasons, 1974 and 1975.
A popular phrase used during the time Lee Roy and Dewey were wreaking havoc on opposing offenses while at OU was:
"“Lee Roy buries ’em and Dewey calls the next of kin.”"
Lee Roy went on to win both the Outland Trophy and the Lombardi Award as the best interior lineman in college football in the 1975 season. He was also one of four former Oklahoma Sooners to be the No, 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.
The Selmon statue is currently be sculpted and is schedule to be unveiled sometime in the 2022 college football season.
