It was touch and go for a while on Monday as to whether there would be an Oklahoma football season opener on Saturday.

The two schools — Oklahoma and Tulane — agreed, however, to move the game out of New Orleans, where the Sooners were scheduled to play, and relocate the venue to Norman. The change comes in the aftermath of the storm damage and recovery effort caused by Hurricane Ida.

So, it’s all systems go, again, for Oklahoma to open the season on Saturday, albeit with a stadium only half filled (lower bowl only) because of the short turnaround notice and the inability to assemble a full stadium staff for the game.

The Sooners also named four football captains for the season. Quarterback Spencer Rattler and H-back/tight end Jeremiah Hall will represent the offensive unit, while Caleb Kelly and Pat Fields will represent the defense. All are seniors except for Rattler, who is classified as a redshirt sophomore but is clearly the face of the team.

Fields was a captain of the 2020 Sooners team, as well.

Saturday’s contest will be the second in a three-game series that began in 2017. The first game was played in Norman and won by Oklahoma 55-14. The final game in the series is scheduled for 2024 in Norman.

According to the press release issued by the OU athletic department announcing the change of venue for Saturday’s game, the two schools have agreed to work together to identify a future season to make up for losing this year’s game in New Orleans.
