Sooner QB Spencer Rattler early favorite to win 201 Heisman

Oklahoma football quarterback Spencer Rattler is likely going to win his share of individual awards and honors this season, but the one he covets the most is the Heisman Trophy.

Winning a national championship is the ultimate team goal, of course, and should that happen, Rattler will be a major part of it, but there is no higher individual honor in college football than joining the prestigious Heisman fraternity.

Four Oklahoma quarterbacks have won the Heisman Trophy since the 2003 season, including two in the last four years (and a third Sooner QB in that span was the Heisman runner-up).

The Heisman has been a quarterback-driven award over the past two decades. Eight of the last 10 Heisman winners were quarterbacks and 17 of the past 20

Rattler had a strong season a year ago, his first as the Oklahoma starter. He completed 214 of 317 passes for 3,031 yards and 28 touchdowns with seven interceptions. Expectations are even higher this season for the second-year starter.

With the kickoff to the 2021 season now less than a month away, Rattler has been established as the preseason favorite to be the unprecedented third Sooner quarterback to win the Heisman in the past five seasons.

According to WynnBETS Heisman odds, Rattler is +525 to win college football most prestigious individual award this season (that means a $100 bet on Rattler to win the 2021 Heisman would pay $625).

Rattler is also a preseason candidate for both the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award; the Davey O’Brien and Manning Award, honoring the nation’s best college quarterback; Preseason All-Big 12 and The Sporting News All-America First Team

The chances of a quarterback taking home the 2021 Heisman Trophy are high again this year with nine of the top-10 preseason Heisman candidates quarterbacks.

Oklahoma is tied with Notre Dame and Ohio State for the most Heisman winners all-time (7).
