With Spencer Rattler making his second start in a Big 12 conference game, and coming on the heels of a home loss to Kansas State a week earlier, Oklahoma jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the opening quarter and increased the advantage to 17-6 early in the second quarter. Iowa State scored 17 of the next 20 points and took its first lead in the game, 23-20, on a 65-yard touchdown pass from ISU quarterback Brock Purdy to wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson right before the third-quarter ended.

The game was tied twice in the final quarter at 23 and 30. The Sooners led 30-23 midway through the fourth quarter, but Iowa State scored shortly thereafter to knot things up at 30, and the Cyclones added another score on an eight-yard run by Big 12 rushing leader Breece Hall with four minutes to go that held up to hand Oklahoma its second consecutive loss for the first time since the 1999 season.

Oklahoma and Iowa State would meet again in the 2020 Big 12 Championship, with the Sooners prevailing 27-21 to win their sixth consecutive conference crown and 14th since 2000.
