Drake Stoops awarded a scholarship
For Drake Stoops, it’s not about the financial aid, but rather about the recognition that he is a valued contributor to this Oklahoma football team. On Saturday afternoon following the spring game, head coach Lincoln Riley announced to the team that Stoops had been awarded a scholarship.
The son of former Sooner head coach and all-time coaching wins leader at OU, Bob Stoops, was a walk-on to the program in 2018 after a stellar high school career at Norman North High School. He played in Oklahoma’s first two games his freshman season, catching two passes for 16 yards. He played in all 14 of the Sooners games in 2019 and all 10 last season.
Last season he had a career-high 15 receptions for 219 yards, including a couple of touchdowns, and averaged 21.9 yards per catch.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Riley said during the postgame celebration. “You can see the respect our team has for Drake and the way he works every single day.”
