Oklahoma basketball: Austin Reaves named to All-Big 12 First Team

Oklahoma basketball senior Austin Reaves is one of five Big 12 players named to the All-Conference First Team.

Reaves joins two others who were also Preseason All-Big 12 selections: Cade Cunningham of Oklahoma State and Jared Butler of Texas Tech. The other two members of the 2020-21 All-Big 12 team are Derek Culver of West Virginia and Baylor’s Davion Mitchell.

OSU’s Cunningham was named both the Big 12 Player of the Year as well as Freshman of the Year.

Sooner sophomore guard De’Vion Harmon also earned Big 12 recognition as All-Big 12 Honorable Mention.

This is Reaves’ second season with the Sooners. He transferred from Wichita State after his sophomore season. The Oklahoma scoring leader this season has averaged 18.8 points in conference games this season, second only to Cunningham. Reaves is the only player in Big 12 history to average at least 18.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists during league play.

The Sooner senior from Newark, Arkansas, is a master at getting to the free=throw line. And when he does, he leads the Big 12 in free throws made (122), free throws attempted (144) and free-throw percentage (87.1).

The Sooner senior is also on track to become the first OU player to lead the team in points, rebounds and assists since assists were first recognized as an NCAA statistic in 1983.

Harmon is second on this season’s OU team, averaging 13.0 points, along with 3.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and shoots 47.1 percent from the field. His scoring averaging is almost double from his freshman season.

Reaves is the 11th Oklahoma Sooner to become an All-Big 12 First Team selection. Kristian Doolittle was a first-team honoree a year ago.
