Oklahoma basketball tumbles to No. 16 in Associated Press Top 25
By Chip Rouse
A pair of Oklahoma basketball losses over the past seven days cost the Sooners nine spots in the latest Associated Press poll.
Oklahoma tumbled nine spots, from No. 7 last week down to No. 16, while Oklahoma State made a similar but forward advancement to move one spot behind the Sooners, at No. 17 in the AP poll.
The Sooners fell to No. 15 in this week’s Coaches Poll, one back of No. 14 Kansas, but still ahead of No. 16 Texas and No. 15 Oklahoma State.
This latest development gives Lon Kruger’s Oklahoma team an opportunity in the Bedlam rematch with the Cade Cunningham and the Cowboys on Monday night to record a sixth win over a nationally ranked team, which would be a big boost to the Sooners’ NCAA Tournament resume and seeding.
And they will get yet another opportunity against a ranked team when Oklahoma hosts No. 15 Texas on Thursday.
The Sooners’ first appearance this season in the top-25 didn’t occur until Jan. 25. Since then Oklahoma had been steadily rising. Their No. 7 ranking was the team’s highest since climbing to No. 4 in January 2018 with the Trae Young Sooner team.
Gonzaga remains a unanimous No. 1. Michigan replaced Baylor at No. 2, with the Bears falling just one spot, to No. 3, after suffering their first loss of the season at Kansas on Saturday.
West Virginia has been quietly moving up the rankings since its double-overtime loss to Oklahoma on Feb. 13. The Big 12’s second-place team is 6-1 in its last seven games, the only loss coming against the Sooners. West Virginia is a No. 6 this week in the AP poll, up from No.10.
Two other Big 12 teams, seven in all, are ranked this week in the AP Top 25. Kansas is No. 13, and Texas Tech No. 18.
