The last Oklahoma football tight end from the state of Texas was pretty special, and they have a commitment from another for 2022.

Jason Lelwellyn, a three-star prospect out of Aledo, Texas, announced on social media on Friday that he had committed to Oklahoma. Making Lelwellyn’s commitment that much more special is the University of Texas was also actively pursuing him.

The 6-foot, 5-inch, 240-pound tight end caught 28 passes for 453 yards and five touchdowns this past season in helping lead his high school to a Texas state championship.

Joe Jon Finely, a former Sooner player and the latest addition to coach Lincoln Riley’s coaching staff, deserves most of the credit for influencing Lelwellyn’s commitment.

Among Lelwellyn’s reported strengths are his versatility and athleticism for his size and his impressive blocking skills.

According to Collin Kennedy, an OU Insider for 247Sports, it took Lelwellyn just six days to declare his verbal commitment after he received the offer on Feb. 13.

Lelwellyn also had high interest from other Big 12 Baylor, TCU, Texas, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech), Big Ten (Michigan, Michiogan State and Minnesota) and SEC schools (Arkansas, Auburn and Mississippi).

He becomes the sixth member of Oklahoma’s 2022 recruiting class and the fifth offensive player. Lelwellyn joins five-star wide receiver Luther Burden, four-star wide-receiver recruits Talyn Shettron and Jordan Hudson, five-star running back Raleek Brown, who chose Oklahoma over Alabama and Michigan, and four-star linebacker Kobie McKinzie.

The Sooners’ 2022 class currently ranks fourth by Rivals and sixth in the 247Sports team rankings. The 2021 Oklahoma class was ranked 11th by 247Sports, 13th by Rivals and 15th by ESPN.
