Oklahoma football: Sooners land big-time O-line portal pickup
By Chip Rouse
Oklahoma football recruiting literally gained a huge pickup, landing former five-star offensive lineman Wanya Morris through the transfer portal.
The Sooners beat out Texas A&M for Morris, who played the past two seasons at Tennessee and was a top-five player at his position in the 2019 class.
The news comes at just the right time for the Sooners, who are losing starting right tackle Adrian Ealy to the NFL Draft and also missed out on five-star 2021 offensive-line recruit Tristan Leigh to Clemson.
Morris, a 6-foot, 5-inch, 320-pound offensive tackle played two seasons at Tennessee. He saw action in 23 games and made 19 starts for the Volunteers. After the Volunteers went 3-7 this season, and head coach Jeremy Pruitt was rumored to be on his way out (he was officially fired on Monday this week), Morris elected to transfer.
He had previously revealed that Oklahoma, Texas A&M and USC were his top choices. Parker Thune, who covers OU sports for 247Sports reported that Morris spent some time in College Station, Texas, where Texas A&M is located, over the weekend. It appeared the Aggies had the inside track and A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher had recruited Morris when Fisher was at Florida State.
Morris, however, apparently felt better about the fit at Oklahoma and the opportunity to play under OU offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh, who is considered one of the best in the country.
The Tennessee transfer should have two years of eligibility remaining and should be able to step in immediately in a starting role.
