Oklahoma football: Sooner-West Virginia game postponed
By Chip Rouse
The Oklahoma football game at West Virginia, scheduled for this Saturday night, has been postponed.
The Sooners have temporarily paused all team activities because of COVID-19 positive tests and contact tracing protocols. The announcement was made by the Big 12 on Wednesday afternoon in accordance with the conference’s game-interruption guidelines.
The school did not release any further information concerning the number of positive tests or who or which position groups are affected.
The game was scheduled to be televised nationally on Saturday night by ABC. It has now been rescheduled for Dec. 12, with time and broadcast information to be provided closer to time.
This is the first game either school has had postponed or canceled this season because of COVID concerns. It is only the third Big 12 game to be postponed this season. The others were Oklahoma State at Baylor early in the season and Texas at Kansas last weekend.
Oklahoma is ranked 11th in the first College Football Playoff rankings for 2020 released Tuesday night. The Sooners are the highest ranked Big 12 team in the Playof rankings. Big 12 leader Iowa State, which is responsible for one of the Sooners two losses this season, is next at No, 13, Texas is 17th and Oklahoma State is 23rd.
Iowa State currently leads the Big 12 with a 6-1 conference record. Oklahoma is second with a 5-2 record in conference action. West Virginia is tied for fourth with Kansas State, both with 4-3 league records.
The Sooners next scheduled game will be at home at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium against Baylor on Dec. 5.
