Oklahoma football running back Rhamondre Stevenson had not played in a game since early last December.

The senior running back scored the winning touchdown in Oklahoma’s Big 12 Championship win over Baylor. He would have followed that by playing for the Sooners in the College Football Playoff against LSU, only he and two other OU players (DE Ronnie Perkins and WR Trejan Bridges) were suspended for that game and the first five games this season for failing a test for marijuana.

Stevenson returned to action on Saturday for the first time this, and he picked up right where he left off, helping lead the Sooners to 62-28 win over Texas Tech. On Monday, he was named Big 12 Co-Offensive Player of the Week.

The 6-foot, 246-pound running back gained a team-high 87 yards rushing and averaged 6.7 yards per carry in the win at Texas Tech. He also caught two passes for 13 yards. Stevenson became Sooners’ leading returning running back from a year ago when Kennedy Brooks opted out this season because of COVID-19 concerns. Stevenson led the nation last season with an average of 8.0 yards per rush.

Stevenson shares Offensive Player of the Week honors with wide receiver Tylan Wallace of Oklahoma State. Other Big 12 honorees this week are Joseph Ossai of Texas, Defensive Player of the Week; D’Shawn Jamison of Texas, Special Teams Player of the Week; and West Virginia’s Tony Fields II, Newcomer of the Week.

Stevenson is the sixth Oklahoma player honored this season with seven Big 12 weekly awards. Quarterback Spencer Rattler was Newcomer of the Week and reserve kicker Stephen Johnson was Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 14. T.J. Pledger was Offensive Player of the Week and David Ugwoebu was Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 12, and Marvin Mims was Co-Offensive Player and Newcomer of the Week
