Oklahoma football wide receiver Theo Wease was one of three five-star receiver prospects in the Sooners’ 2019 recruiting class.

That was the same top-10 Oklahoma class that included five-star quarterback Spencer Rattler, the No. 1 player in the country at that position that same year. This was supposed to be the breakout year for Rattler and the three five-star receiving prospects from that 2019 class.

Nearly half-way through OU’s 2020 season, however, only Rattler and Wease have been available. And both played major contributing roles to the Sooners’ dramatic, four-overtime win over Texas this past weekend.

Missing in action from that prime-time trio of receiving talent in Oklahoma’s 2019 class are Jadon Hasselwood, from Ellenwood, Georgia (out with an ACL injury), and Trejan Bridges, from Carrollton, Texas (suspended).

Wease caught a team-high eight passes for 52 yards against Texas, a school he grew up just a 30-minute ride from in nearby Allen, Texas. That was one more than his receiving total in the first three Oklahoma games this season. Wease came into the Red River Showdown on Saturday with seven total catches for 93 yards.

He caught 2 passes for 44 yards in the season opener against Missouri State and had four receptions for 43 yards in the Sooners’ Big 12 opener against Kansas State. But he caught just one pass in the loss at Iowa State and also dropped a potential touchdown pass in that game, so he was primed for a bounce-back game.

The 6-foot, 3-inch sophomore receiver was instrumental in Oklahoma’s 17-play, 87-yard touchdown drive early in the third quarter that regained the lead for the Sooners at 24-17. Wease hauled in four of his eight passes for the game on that drive, including three for first downs.

Wease was on the receiving end of the pass from Rattler for the two-point conversion in the fourth overtime on Saturday that helped seal the win for the Sooners.

His eight catches versus Texas equaled his season mark in his freshman season a year ago. He also has bettered his season mark in receiving yards with 145 through four games this season. He totaled 138 receiving yards in six game appearances in 2019

Wease did have two touchdown catches a year ago, but he is still looking for his first TD grab in 2020. Something tells me that will be happening very soon. Maybe even in Oklahoma’s next game, which will be Oct. 24 at TCU.
